I WILL NEED YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS TO SEED YOU PIC'S. I refurbed a 7301 last year and they're really simple to work on, just remember to take out the spindle woodruff key under the back gear.ATLAS CRAFTSMAN 6 INCH LATHE MK 1+2 560-196 TENSIONER PULLEY ASSEMBLY IF YOU WOULD LIKE DIFFERENT PIC'S JUST ASK. Can't remember the thread, but its a common one (5/16-18?). Drill a hole in the other end of the strap and use a longer bolt for the bearing pinch bolt. Bend a piece of 1/8 or 3/16in steel to fit the headstock, drill a hole for the oil cup (might be better to remove the cup and replace it after adding the strap to keep the hole small), then drill and tap a thread in the headstock between the oil cup and the back gear shaft bit. Other than buying another 7301 headstock (they do pop up on ebay occasionally), I would strap it. Paul - you're right that you can't replace it with a 618/ timken bearing head stock as the spindle threads are different to yours. The 7301 has sintered bronze bearings, so it has a pinch bolt for each bearing, I'm guessing to take up any side to side play in the spindle (end to end is taken up by a threaded nut on the outboard end of the spindle).

The different spindles, bearings and there headstocks do not interchange.Ĭheck this out for information about your lathe and damn near everything else that you will need.Īnd don’t forget to download your FREE copy of Machinery’s handbook. Over the years The Atlas 618 has had at least 3 different spindle threads with at least three different spindle bearing arrangements, CI, bronze and tapered roller. My spindle threads are 1" x 8tpi, so if I replace the entire headstock with a newer one, i'll need to replace my chuck mounting plates and face plate - not a big deal, but an added step I'd prefer to avoid.ĭoes anyone have or know where I might be able to find parts?Īlso, is there any way to upload images to the posts without using an image web host? I'd like to show you what I'm talking about, but don't use a webhost for photos.Į Bay for parts. Option 3 is the path of least resistance, though I can't seem to locate a donor headstock casting. So the options are 1) to mill out a section of the casting and fit a shop made bearing cap to it, 2) "sister" a formed piece of steel over the broken section, using it as a shim and relying on the new steel piece to handle the clamping pressure, or 3) find a replacement casting / headstock.

Even if the iron weren't oil soaked, a braze or weld probably wouldn't work there.

It's thin at that spot and needs to be flexible to clamp pressure down on the split bearing. The big exception is that the head stock main casting has a break in it right above the spindle bearing. The lathe I have is from the early to mid 1940's and has the split sintered bronze spindle bearings - not the Timken tapered rollers.Īt any rate, the lathe is in good, unworn condition and has a decent amount of tooling with it.

My Dad is a retired journeyman machinist, who will help me get it going and teach me how to use it. I'm not sure which way i'll fall yet, but I have it and my plan is to set it up and start learning how to use it. I know this model has its share of lovers and haters. I recently picked up a Craftsman 101.07301 (Atlas 618) lathe. I've quietly trolled around this site before, but this is my first post.
